Preparing to Upgrade from FTTN to FTTP? - Here Is A Step-by-Step Guide.
Upgrading your internet connection from FTTN (Fibre to the Node) to FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) can provide faster, more reliable speeds, but it requires a few steps to get everything set up properly. Whether you're a DIY enthusiast or prefer expert help, we’ve got you covered.
1. Understanding the Upgrade: FTTN vs FTTP
FTTN: Involves fibre optic cables running to a nearby node, with copper cables used for the final connection to your home.
FTTP: Delivers fibre optic cables directly into your premises, offering more stable and faster internet speeds.
When you upgrade to FTTP, the first step is to ensure your equipment and home are ready for the change.
2. Preparing for the Installation
Check Compatibility: Your modem/router should be compatible with the new FTTP connection. If it's not, you'll need a new one. Check with your ISP or let us help you choose the best equipment for your needs.
Location of the NBN Connection Box: The FTTP NBN Connection Box will be installed on your wall, ideally near your router. Ensure the location is clear for the technician to work.
3. The FTTP Setup Process
Step 1: Equipment Installation: A technician will install the NBN Connection Box inside your home and connect it to the fibre line.
Step 2: Router Setup: Once the connection box is live, you'll need to connect your router. This may require resetting your router or configuring it with new settings from your ISP.
Step 3: Testing the Connection: After setup, run a speed test to ensure everything is working as expected.
Connect the NBN Connection Box
Position the NBN Connection Box: The NBN Connection Box should be installed on a wall near your router. Make sure there’s enough space for the cables.
Connect the Fibre Cable: The technician will connect the fibre optic cable to the NBN Connection Box. This is usually done during the installation process, but ensure it’s secure.
Router Connection to the NBN Box
Locate the WAN Port: Your router should have a WAN (Wide Area Network) port, often labeled Internet or WAN.
Connect the Router to the NBN Connection Box:
Use an Ethernet cable to connect the LAN port of the NBN Connection Box to the WAN port on your router.
Ensure the Ethernet cable is securely plugged into both devices.
Power On the NBN Connection Box and Router
Plug the power cable of the NBN Connection Box into an electrical socket and turn it on.
Similarly, plug in the power adapter for your router and turn it on.
Wait a few minutes for both devices to fully power up and establish a connection.
Router Login for PPPoE Settings
PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet) is the protocol used by many ISPs (Internet Service Providers) to manage broadband connections. To configure it:
Open the Router’s Web Interface:
Open a web browser on a device connected to your router.
Type the router’s IP address into the address bar (commonly 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1). Check the bottom of your router for the exact address.
Enter the username and password (default details are usually listed on the router label or the manual).
Configure PPPoE:
Once logged in, navigate to the Internet Settings or WAN Settings.
Select PPPoE as the connection type.
Enter the username and password provided by your ISP (usually sent to you by email or provided by your technician during installation).
Save the Settings:
After entering your ISP credentials, click Save or Apply to save the settings.
Test the Connection
Check Connection Status:
Your router should display a message that the connection is established, or you may see a status indicator light turning solid green or blue (depending on your router model).
Run a Speed Test:
Once your router is connected to the NBN, perform a speed test to ensure you’re getting the speeds promised by your ISP.
You can use tools like speedtest.net or other online speed testers to check your connection.
4. Diagnosing Common FTTP Issues
Sometimes, things may not work as expected after installation. Here's how to diagnose common FTTP issues:
No Internet Connection:
Check all cables to ensure they are securely connected.
Reset your router by turning it off for 10 seconds and then turning it back on.
If the problem persists, check for NBN outages or service disruptions in your area.
Slow Internet Speeds:
Run a speed test using a wired connection to ensure you’re getting the speeds you paid for.
If speeds are slower than expected, try rebooting your router or moving it to a more central location in your home.
Check if your Wi-Fi signal is strong enough or if other devices are hogging the bandwidth.
Intermittent Connection:
Ensure there are no issues with your Wi-Fi router or interference from other devices like microwaves or cordless phones.
If problems continue, check with your ISP for any line issues.
Look for issues with the NBN service or equipment.
